The remains of one of the largest Roman villas in the country provide a fascinating insight into 4th-century Roman Britain.
The ruins nestle in a wooded combe in the heart of the Cotswolds at Yanworth, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. The site is surrounded by beautiful woodland walks. Take a leisurely walk around the ruins and see its many mosaics, two bathhouses, water shrine, latrine, museum and spectacular views across the valley. Experienced guides will inform and immerse you in the lives of those who lived and worked in this 4th-century 'stately home'.
The site was discovered in 1864 on the Earl of Eldon's estate by a local gamekeeper, and subsequently excavated by his estate workers. Visitors to the museum will discover artefacts from the villa, and an audio-visual presentation that brings history to life.
There are Romano-British costumed interpretation and Living History events throughout the season, including Gladiators and Roman soldiers. Children's drop-in mosaic-making sessions, trails and quizzes during school holidays.
