Welcome to the Cotswolds

A brief guide to some of the many and varied towns and areas of the Cotswolds

In the Cotswolds there are famous cities like Bath and Oxford as well as attractive towns like Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester and there are dozens of delightful villages such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Norton, Burford and Snowshill, of Bridget Jones fame. The uniquely honey-coloured stone, widely used for building throughout the area, ensures the Cotswolds enduring visual appeal, famous all over the world.
The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB) which means that it is a special landscape which is safeguarded for future generations. The National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949 led to the first AONB being created in 1956; the Gower Peninsula. Ten years later, in 1966 the Cotswolds was designated as an AONB. The Cotswolds AONB is the largest in England, encompassing an area covering 790 square miles (2,038 sq kms). for the Cotswolds AONB website. The Cotswolds are crossed by ancient trails such as the the Cotswold Way and the Thames Path, providing excellent easy walking and both are designated National Trails - Click here for the National Trail website and other walking guide websites such as Walkingworld and Best Walks.
